A Florida company is recalling fresh basil that was sold in Washington, Oregon and Rhode Island because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Sanith Ourn Farm of Indiantown, FL said in a news release that the problem was identified during routine sampling by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

No illnesses have been reported.

According to the news release, 390 lbs. of the basil, sold as Fresh Hot Basil, was shipped in 10 lb. containers to retailers and one wholesale location in Washington, Oregon and Rhode Island on Aug. 23 and Aug. 30, 2011. The containers were marked with FLT DATE of 08/23/11 and 08/30/11. However, retailers may have bundled or wrapped the basil in small foam trays.

Although the producer noted that Hot Basil has a five-day shelf life, consumers could have used the herb in pesto or other foods to be frozen.

Consumers may return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.  Consumers with questions may contact the company, Sanith Ourn, at 561-449-6660 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, ET.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.  In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections and arthritis.
